What it is

About Brake Repair

Brake repair restores the parts that slow and stop your car: the pads, the rotors, the calipers and the hydraulic system that moves fluid between them. Extreme Tires does brake repair in the bay at our Sunrise shop, for South Florida customers. It needs a lift and bay equipment, so it is not a van service.

Pads wear by design. They press on the rotors every time you stop, and the friction material gets thinner until it has to be replaced. A technician decides on rotors and calipers by measurement, not by guess.

What's included

Everything in this service

  • Pad and rotor measurement
  • Caliper and slide pin service

  • Road test and bed-in

Signs you need this

When to call us

  • Squealing or grinding when stopping

Brake symptoms do not tend to improve on their own. Have the pads, rotors and fluid inspected when you first notice one.

When you need it

Signs, mileage and age

AAA lists the signs that brakes may need attention: a high-pitched squeal or grinding noise, vibration or pulsing through the pedal, a spongy or soft pedal, longer stopping distances, the car pulling to one side, leaking fluid, a burning smell and a lit ABS warning light. AAA says a squeal or grind can mean the pad has worn down to where its wear indicator touches the rotor.

AAA says brakes are generally due for replacement around every 30,000 miles, depending on driving habits and road conditions, and that stop-and-go traffic and hard braking shorten that. It suggests checking the brakes each time the wheels are rotated, and says pads thinner than roughly a quarter inch likely need replacing.

Your owner's manual lists the vehicle maker's inspection schedule. It takes priority over any general mileage figure.

Step by step

What happens in the Sunrise bay

  1. Listen to your description and inspect the brakes at each wheel.
  2. Measure pad thickness and rotor condition.
  3. Service the calipers and slide pins.
  4. Replace the hardware and shims, and fit new pads. Rotors are replaced where the measurements call for it.
  5. Inspect the brake fluid.
  6. Road test the car and bed in the new pads.

Straight pricing

From $189 per axle

That is a real starting price, not a teaser. What you actually pay depends on your vehicle and what the job needs. We confirm the total with you before any tool comes out, and the price we quote is the price you pay.

What changes the price

  • How many axles. The price is per axle, so a front and rear job is two.
  • Rotors. If they are within specification, pads may be enough. AAA says rotors that are cracked or grooved may need replacement, and warped ones are either resurfaced or replaced.
  • Calipers and hydraulics. A seized caliper, a leaking line or contaminated fluid is extra work beyond the base job, and you hear the estimate before we start it.
  • The vehicle. Heavier trucks and performance vehicles use larger parts, and electronic parking brakes need extra steps.

Questions, answered

Brake Repair: common questions

How do I know if I need brake repair?

Watch for a squeal or grinding noise, a pulsing or soft pedal, longer stops, pulling to one side, leaking fluid or a lit ABS light. These are the signs AAA lists. If one shows up, have the pads, rotors and fluid inspected.

How long do brake pads last?

AAA gives about 30,000 miles as a general figure, but hard braking and stop-and-go traffic can shorten that. The reliable answer for your car is a measurement of the pads and rotors.

Do you do brake repair at my house?

No. Brake repair is bay work at the Sunrise shop because it needs a lift and bay equipment. The van covers tires, balancing, oil changes and TPMS. Call with your vehicle and we will price it by phone.
